Sergeant helps young mother deliver baby at Roedtan Police Station

Sergeant Nkhangweni Mogoru indicated that she understood the risks that were involved in delivering the baby, but added that they are often faced with situations where they have to perform duties beyond the normal SAPS mandate in order to save lives.

LIMPOPO – An unusual event occurred at the Roedtan Police Station recently, when Sergeant Nkhangweni Mogoru went beyond her duty.

The sergeant, with the help of Const Mnisi Solomon, helped a 23-year-old mother deliver her baby girl.

According to a statement by Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the young mother came to the Community Service Centre, situated at the reception of the station, complaining about labour pains at about 13:30.

“Constable Mnisi was on duty and managed to contact sergeant Mogoru, who was on patrol duty. She quickly rushed back to the station and the duo assisted the woman in giving birth in the boardroom of the station. The members summoned an ambulance which came and transported the newborn baby and her mother to the hospital,” he explained.

He added that Mogoru used her own emergency kit and resources to deliver the baby

Mogoru indicated that she understood the risks that were involved in delivering the baby, but added that they are often faced with situations where they have to perform duties beyond the normal SAPS mandate in order to save lives.

“I am so happy. I left my normal duty to save the lives of the mother and child. Constable Mnisi called me as no one was available to help at the local clinic,” she told Review.

Mogoru explained that this was not the first time she has helped a mother deliver her baby.

“I helped another lady cut off the umbilical cord in 2009. I just knocked off when the incident occurred and I rushed to help the mother. I then called an ambulance,” she explained.

Moguru had a similar experience in 2012 when another lady struggled to get an ambulance.

“The ambulance took long to arrive and I grabbed blankets and helped the mother,” she added.

Mogoru is currently unaware how the 23-year-old mom and baby are doing, as she says contacting the mother is difficult as they stay on a farm where the network is bad.
