Fatal shooting: Polokwane police sergeant in court

A squabble over a parking spot outside a pub in Biccard Street led to the death of man and a policeman subsequently handing himself over for the crime.

POLOKWANE – The case of a 36-year-old sergeant attached to the Protection and Security Services of the Polokwane police is set to continue next week.

According to the Director of Public Prosecutions’ Regional Spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-​Dzhangi, the sergeant appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court this week and the case was postponed to Monday, 7 June.

POLOKWANE – Moloto Kenneth Shongwe, who worked at one of the local vehicle dealerships in the city, was shot dead at point blank range while sitting in his vehicle just before midnight, as he was waiting for his girlfriend to emerge from the pub.

According to sources, the shooter approached the vehicle, shot the man and fled the scene almost immediately.

A 36-year-old sergeant attached to the Protection and Security Services of the Polokwane police handed himself over on Monday.

According to Police Spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, police and medical emergency personnel were called to the scene on Saturday and responded swiftly.

“The victim was certified dead on the scene and the police commenced with investigations and manhunt for the assailant before he handed himself over.”

A case of murder has been opened. The officer appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on 25 May facing a charge of murder and the case was postponed to 1 June.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident and asserted that decisive action will be taken against the member.

“We want to reassure community members that the majority of police members are disciplined and conduct themselves in accordance with the Code of Conduct. This is an isolated incident that will not be tolerated. In addition to the criminal investigations that are unfolding, police management will also take decisive and prompt internal steps against the officer.”

Shongwe’s brother, Khomotso spoke on behalf of the family and said his brother’s passing came as a huge shock to them. “He was an easy-going person, and it is difficult to understand how he could have been killed over a squabble for parking space. The family is left with so many questions. We fail to understand what exactly happened on the night.”

The suspect remains in custody.
