Steady increase in new Covid-19 cases

This week, Minister Zweli Mkhize urged Gauteng residents to adhere to health protocols as the province is experiencing a greater surge than other provinces.

With the threat of a third wave looming, South Africa recorded a cumulative 19 277 new cases this week.

Thursday (June 3) saw the biggest increase of the week, with 5 361 new cases recorded, while Monday (May 31) recorded only 2 792 cases.

Vaccination roll-out:

On Tuesday (June 1), South Africa breached the one-million mark of vaccinations and as of Thursday, the total number of individuals vaccinated under the Sisonke and Pfizer programmes stood at 1 193 352.

 Gauteng Surge: 

On Wednesday (June 2), Health Minister Zweli Mkhize urged residents in Gauteng to adhere to health protocols after noting that the province was experiencing the highest surge in the country.

As of Thursday, the province had recorded 465 668 confirmed cases, 11 339 deaths, 434 452 recoveries, and a total of 19 877 active cases.

On the same day, the country’s cumulative cases totalled 1 680 373, with 1 567 635 recoveries, representing a recovery rate of 93.3%.

A total of 368 Covid-19 related deaths were reported this week, with 95 recorded on Tuesday.
