5 killed in head-on collision on N1 north

The fatal collision is the second fatal head-on incident that was reported on the N1 north in the past 48 hours.

LIMPOPO – “It is unacceptable that we wake up everyday to the sad news of people killed by reckless drivers, who have no regard for the law.”

These are the sentiments of Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, following a fatal collision on the N1 north outside Louis Trichardt in the Vhembe district.

“Five people were killed in a head-on collision involving two sedans on the N1 north last night. It is alleged that the driver of one of the sedans was overtaking, when he collided with an oncoming vehicle,” explained the department’s media liaison officer, Mike Maringa.

In his statement, he noted that both drivers were killed instantly together with three passengers.

“Another passenger, who survived but sustained serious injuries, was rushed to a hospital in Louis Trichardt. Reckless driving has been cited as a possible cause of the accident,” Maringa added.

The fatal collision is the second fatal head-on incident that was reported on the N1 north in the past 48 hours.

Three people are dead and five others injured after two vehicles collided head-on along the N1-28 north of Polokwane on Wednesday, 2 June.

The incident involved two hatchbacks and happened near Ga-Phasha at 12:00.

Lerule-Ramakhanya cautioned motorists to reduce speed and avoid overtaking unnecessarily

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their loved ones in these horrific crashes. We hope other drivers will learn from this and make sure they work together to reduce fatal crashes on our roads,” she concluded.
