3 suspects at large following robbery at Westenburg Post Office

Customers and employees were in the building when the incident happened

POLOKWANE – According to the South African Post Office’s Communications Officer, Johan Kruger, three men are at large following a robbery at the Westenburg Post Office, this morning.

“The incident happened this morning, June 3, around 10:00 and an undisclosed amount of cash has been stolen,” he added.

Kruger said there were customers and employees in the building when the incident happened.

“The robbers walked into the post office as ordinary customers and produced firearms when they were inside. They then demanded cash from the employees. The customers were unharmed,” he explained.

Kruger said there were no injuries, but added that the victims of the robbery will receive trauma counselling should they need it.

“The branch will be closed until police have completed their forensic investigation. The branch is seen as a crime scene until the investigation is complete,” he added.

As an alternative, Kruger suggested that people make use of the Superbia Post Office in the meantime.

“We expect the branch to reopen tomorrow, June 4, and we apologise for the unavoidable inconvenience. Security measures at the branch will be improved as a matter of urgency,” he concluded.

Review contacted Westenburg Police Station Commander, Lt Col Maimele Pilusa, who confirmed the incident but failed to disclose any details.
