Young beauty queen wants to change the world

24-year-old Nthabiseng Makgato wants to empower other young girls like herself to be more confident.

POLOKWANE – The 24-year-old resident from Luthuli Park, Nthabiseng Makgato is passionate about modelling. She was a finalist in both the Miss Limpopo Royal (2019) and the Miss Radiant South Africa (2020) pageants. Now she has the Miss Phenomenal Queen South Africa Finale in August to prepare for.

“When I reached the top 15 in Miss Phenomenal Queen South Africa it motivated me to stick to modelling because I am the only girl to represent Limpopo. My goal in this journey as Miss Phenomenal Queen South Africa is to empower other young girls like myself to be more confident. I always wanted to make a change in society, that’s why I started my own organisation, which is called Lets fight Poverty, where I collect non-perishable food, sanitary towels and clothes for disabled and disadvantaged people in rural areas,” said Makgato.

She said sometimes judges are not fair because they award titles to people they know. “Some of the judges give us false hope. To be a model is not about the fame, it’s about empowering yourself and showing the people that you have the power to rule the world. I want to be a voice for the voiceless. I want to lead by example and be a role model for young people. I want them to be able to look at me and say ‘if she can do it, I know I can do it too’,” she said. She tells BONUS that modelling is her passion and she loves it when everyone’s eyes are on her, because it boosts her confidence. “I started modelling two years ago. Ever since I was a kid, I always wanted to be a model, but I wasn’t able to be one due to circumstances. My dream is to become Miss Universe or Miss South Africa one day,” Makgato explained.

She concluded by saying she grew up idolising Bonkang Montshana. “She grew up in a rural area and proved that there is nothing impossible in this world, regardless of where you come from.”

Apart from modelling, Makgato is a head of political education at South African Learners Command, and she holds a diploma in dermatology from Sandton Technical College.
