[TAKE NOTE] R81 road between Giyani and Mooketsi closed due to cash-in-transit heist

This incident comes a week after a cash-in-transit vehicle was bombed on the N1 north.

LIMPOPO – The R81 road is closed between Lebaba Cross and Bellevue following a cash-in-transit heist, says the Department of Transport.

Motorists travelling between Giyani and Mooketsi are advised to use alternative routes where possible, says, Mike Maringa, Media Liaison Officer for the department.

This incident comes a week after a cash-in transit vehicle was bombed along the N1 north.

The said incident occurred late afternoon north of Louis Trichardt along the N1 near the R523 Waterpoort turnoff on 21 May.  A female motorist who was in the area at the time of the incident reported two groups of people shooting at each other. “Motorists must avoid the area,” she said in a voice note on an emergency group.

According to reports a group of heavily armed men, travelling in three vehicles, forced the cash-in-transit vehicle off the road. The vehicle was reportedly bombed but it is not yet known whether the suspects got away with any money or if anyone was injured during the incident.
