#LindiweMogale murder accused remanded in custody until next week

35-year-old victim, Lindiwe Mogale was seriously injured when the accused doused her in petrol and set her on fire. She died in hospital a few days later.

LIMPOPO – The 30-year-old man accused of the murder of  Lindiwe Mogale was remanded in custody by the Naphuno Magistrate’s court in Maake outside Tzaneen in on Friday, 21 May.

35-year-old victim, Lindiwe Mogale sustained serious burn injuries when the man, who is believed to be her boyfriend, doused her in petrol and set her on fire. She died in hospital a few days later.

The suspect was arrested on Wednesday after he handed himself over to the police in Maake. He faces a charge of murder and arson.

The man is expected to reappear on 28 May 2021 for formal bail application and further police investigations.

Mogale was laid to rest today in Lenyenye outside Tzaneen.

LIMPOPO – A 30-year-old man will appear in the Lenyenye Magistrate’s Court in Maake outside Tzaneen today for the murder of Lindiwe Mogale. 35-year-old victim, Lindiwe Mogale sustained serious burn injuries when the man, who is believed to be her boyfriend, doused her in petrol and set her on fire. She died in hospital a few days later.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said the accused handed himself over to the police in Maake on Wednesday evening. He faces charges of arson and murder.

Mojapleo explained that the deceased was set on fire after a heated argument in the early hours on Thursday, 6 May. “It is alleged the victim had accompanied her boyfriend to a filling station in Nkowankowa, to buy petrol. The couple reportedly got into a heated argument on the way to the boyfriend’s house. On arrival the argument continued and the suspect doused her in petrol and set her alight.”

According to police reports the neighbours reacted when they heard the victim’s screams and found her engulfed in flames. The boyfriend was nowhere to be found and the neighbours doused the fire and notified the police and medical emergency personnel.

The victim had sustained serious burn injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. 

Mojapelo said that cases of attempted murder and arson were opened.  The charge of attempted murder was changed to murder after the victim succumbed to her injuries in hospital on Friday 14 May.

A march against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) will be led by the ANC Bonfire Maponya branch on Friday, 21 May in her honour. Mogale will be laid to rest on Saturday.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident and advised communities to seek assistance when facing relationship challenges.
