Cosatu takes action against unsafe workplaces

Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) had a provincial day of action on Tuesday.

This was in reaction to reported non-compliance to occupational health and safety at different workplaces in and around the city. The picket took place at, among others, a fast food restaurant, a local butchery and a government institution.

Cosatu Provincial Secretary, Gerald Twala explained that the places visited are just a tip of the iceberg as many workplaces have been identified to be non-compliant by unions.

“This was not an inspection, it was a picket outside the premises and the handover of a memorandum in which they have been given seven days to respond,” he said.

He added that non-compliance is in terms of Covid-19 regulations and overall occupational health and safety. He added that at some of the premises, workers did not have proper personal protective equipment, no social distancing was maintained and the general environment was not conducive to work in.
