Two dead after vehicle crashes into tree along R101

Preliminary investigations suggest that fatigue could have been the cause of the incident, says the Department of Transport and Community Safety.

LIMPOPO – Two people died while three others were left injured on Thursday afternoon when a light motor vehicle crashed into a tree.

The incident happened along the R101 road approximately 15km outside Mokopane, says Mike Maringa, the Media Liaison Officer for the department of Transport and Community Safety.

“Two passengers were certified dead on the scene while the driver of the vehicle as well as two other passengers survived the wreck with minor injuries.”

He added that preliminary reports suggest the driver lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue.

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has since pleaded with motorists to stop and rest when they are travelling long distances.

Know the danger signs of driver fatigue

Driver fatigue can affect anyone and according to Arrive Alive has contributed towards thousands of collisions on South African roads, year on year.

Motorists are urged to plan ahead when travelling long distances to ensure there is time to rest and get out of the vehicle and stretch their legs. Danger signs of fatigue include difficulty in paying attention, keeping your eyes open or yawning frequently.

“If you notice any of these signs, stop for a rest and stretch your legs. Exercise can make you more alert but if needed, take a quick 20 minute nap – but only when safe to do so.”
