Owethu celebrates birthday by feeding hungry families

Owethu Khoja says her 12th birthday was the best birthday ever.

POLOKWANE – Owethu Khoja recently celebrated her 12th birthday in the most heartwarming way.

On her birthday, 15 April, she donated food parcels to needy families around Polokwane. With the help of her parents, she managed to raise R8 000, which took her months to raise and she used it to buy non-perishables for 14 families in the city.

Owethu, who is a Gr 6 learner at Pietersburg English Medium Primary School (PEMPS) explained that for the past 10 years of her life, she has received gifts for her birthday and this year it occurred to her that there are families that are not as fortunate as she is.

“I have everything I need. I don’t need more presents, instead I decided to feed those less fortunate than me with the money I saved,” she said.

Owethu, who is an only child, explained that she is blessed to have parents who supported her plans. They even went as far as helping her ask for donations, putting together the food parcels and identifying people who would need them.

“I had the best birthday ever and I hope that next year I can raise more money so that I can help more families, because some of these families are very big with as many as 15 people in a single home,” she explained.
