Limpopo traffic cop shoots partner before turning gun on himself

The incident happened along the Alma road outside Bela-Bela, on Tuesday.

LIMPOPO – The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba, has called on citizens to seek professional assistance when they are faced with domestic or relationship challenges.

Ledwaba’s call follows an incident involving a traffic officer (45) who shot and killed his partner, before turning the gun on himself, on the Alma road outside Bela-Bela, on Tuesday, 27 April.

According to Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, a motorist stopped next to the officer’s vehicle, thinking the woman lying on the ground was a victim of an accident. “When the motorist approached the scene, the uniformed traffic officer, who sat inside, shot himself dead,” he explained.

Mojapelo said the officer was attached to the Bela-Bela Municipality and was reportedly on duty along the R101 road. The police were called and found the body of the woman on the ground next to the road and that of the officer, in the vehicle.

“The officer reportedly used his service pistol and police have since opened cases of murder and inquest. Investigations are continuing,” Mojapelo said.

“Desist from resorting to violent means which often lead to the loss of life,” Ledwaba concluded.
