Limpopo: Six fatal traffic incidents reported since start of school holiday

In one of the incidents, two men were knocked down on the N1 south while walking next to their vehicles in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to the Department of Transport.

LIMPOPO – This weekend, authorities in the province responded to six fatal traffic incidents on provincial roads. Most schools closed their doors on Friday, 23 April for school holiday and according to the Spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Community Safety, Matomi Moremi-Taueatsoala, a total of nine road fatalities have been reported since then. 

Today (Monday, 26 April), traffic police responded to a pedestrian accident on the D1200 road near Mogwadi (Dendron). Moremi-Taueatsoala said the victim, a 63-year-old woman, was knocked over at around 02:00 when she crossed the road at Bockna farm. She was certified dead on the scene.

Meanwhile, eight road users were killed in five separate road collisions on Saturday, 24 April.

The first recorded incident happened along Nelson Mandela Drive in Lephalale at around 01:00. He explained that a 26-year-old woman died when the vehicle she was travelling in slammed into a tree. The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. “Fatigue has been cited as the possible cause of the incident,” Moremi-Taueatsoala added.

Also in the Waterberg district, two people died in a head-on collision between two sedans on the R510 road next to Prospectors Lodge. The incident happened at around 03:55 and fatigue was also cited as the possible cause of the collision.

The vehicles reportedly caught fire and both drivers, two men, died. “One man is 41 years old and the other driver has not yet been identified.”

In a separate incident on the N1 south, two male drivers were knocked down by a truck near the Eerstewoon farm at around 05:30.  “It is alleged the deceased, aged 40 and 46, were walking next to their vehicles when they were knocked down. Both men died on the scene.”

A further two people died on the same day in the Sekhukhne district. This incident happened along the D4285 at Mabithini at 17:45 and two people died while another two sustained serious injuries.

The incident involved a bakkie and a sedan, and both drivers lost control of their vehicles on a curve, resulting in both overturning in different directions.

“Two passengers, aged around 35 years old, died while the driver and a third passenger were injured.”

The injured were taken to the St Ritas Hospital for medical treatment. 

Most incidents happened in the early hours of the morning with fatigue cited as the probably cause. Road users are advised to take breaks when necessary to avoid such incidents from occurring.
