Police kills one suspect in shoot-out after hardware store is robbed

A second suspect was seriously injured and is still in hospital under police guard, says the police.

LIMPOPO – The police shot and killed one robbery suspect and injured another in a shoot out in the Malamulele policing area on Wednesday, 21 April.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said a hardware store at Gumbani village was robbed at around 10:00. “It is alleged the first suspect entered the store pretending to be a client. He then produced a firearm and demanded money from the complainant while the second suspect robbed the victim of an undisclosed amount of money and the keys to a vehicle. The suspects fled the scene in the stolen vehicle,” he explained.

Mojapelo said the police received information about the business robbery, reacted and the suspects were spotted near Dzwerani village under Vuwani policing area.

“The police accosted the suspects and ordered them to stop whereby they abandoned the vehicle, allegedly firing at the police, while they fled on foot. The police returned fire and one suspect was fatally wounded.

“The second suspect was injured and was admitted to a local hospital where he is still under police guard.”

The police recovered the stolen vehicle and a 9mm pistol during the incident.

Mojapelo said the recovered firearm will be subjected to ballistic examination to determine if it was previously used in the commission of other serious crimes.

The suspect will appear in the local magistrate’s court once discharged from the hospital.
