Limpopo: Minibus collides with sedan, killing two learners

It is believed the vehicle was transporting learners to school when it was involved in a collision with a sedan.

LIMPOPO – The Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has expressed her condolences to the families of two learners who died in a head-on collision earlier this morning.

The incident happened along the D1468 road at Ga-Maraise village, Senwabarwana and involved a minibus and a sedan and according to the department’s Media Liaison Officer, Mike Maringa, both learners died on the scene.

“It is alleged that the minibus was being used to transport learners to school when it collided head-on with a sedan.”

After the initial collision the minibus veered off the road and overturned, he explained. “Two learners, aged 14 and 15, were certified dead on the scene and a further nine learners sustained minor injuries.”

The injured learners were rushed to Helen Franz hospital for treatment and have since been discharged. The driver of the sedan did not sustained any injuries, he said.

“Speeding has been cited as the possible cause of the accident.”

This fatal incident comes days after six learners from Jim Chavani Secondary School were killed, when the vehicle they were travelling in slammed into a house at Ximixoni village at Malamulele in the Vhembe district.

In an earlier statement Maringa explained that the driver of the bakkie apparently lost control of the vehicle and hit a house. “Five boys and one girl, died on impact while six other occupants escaped with injuries,” Maringa explained.

The department of Social Development and Education have since visited the families of the deceased and will assist with the burial of the victims.

Lerule-Ramakhanya further called on public transport operators, especially those that are transporting learners to schools, to be extra cautious and to adhere to road rules and regulations.
