‘Only education can help transform their lives’

Seasoned English teacher and newly appointed Principal of the secondary school, Abraham Mmethi aspires to make Maseala Progressive School a school of excellence.

POLOKWANE – Mmethi assumed the role on 1 March and he says his main objective is to help the school to produce a 100% matric pass rate for the 2021 academic year.

He pointed out that to achieve the goal he will need the involvement of everyone.

“My approach will involve enlisting the support of parents in providing resources as well as logistics for extra classes. Secondly, only education can transform their lives, families and communities. Teachers have to fully utilise contact time and must always be open to suggest and propose new approaches to improve learner performance.

“The community also has to be involved in ensuring a child’s right to education is not infringed through actions like protest. Engagement and consultation with all involved parties and constant sharing of desired results is the key to creating a school of excellence,” Mmethi said.

Subsequent to that, Mmethi stated that he will engage with colleagues from schools that consistently achieve 100% matric pass rates to adopt this winning strategies.

“Furthermore, to constantly motivate my team of teachers not to settle for good but to aim for great, because good is the enemy of great. Going back to basics; Classroom management and control, eradicating littering as well as redlining noisiness will always ensure great results. In addition to this continued parental involvement and support will guarantee consistently excellent results.”

He says the support he is enjoying from the board of directors will enable him to reach his ultimate goal.

“I also want to create an enabling environment for learners to always feel free, comfortable and confident when at school. The creation of a conducive learner-friendly environment is something I am passionate about. A happy, smiling learner will always perform at their best.”

Mmethi joined Maseala in January 2012 as an English Home Language and geography teacher.

In 2013 he was appointed head of sport and culture and during his tenure the school’s debate team as well as the soccer team performed fairly well in the leagues and tournaments they participated in.

As of 2014 he was promoted to head the language department.

He has also served as the disciplinary committee chairperson since 2014.

He has been able to build relationships with external stakeholders for the well- being of the learners such as South African Police Service (SAPS), religious and community leaders.

As a teacher he has distinguished himself well boasting a 100% English Home Language pass rate since 2014 to date.
