15-year-old girl in custody following viral bullying video

Police say the girl will be dealt with in accordance with the Child Justice Act.

LIMPOPO – Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo says they have arrested a 15-year-old, Mbilwi Secondary School learner following the assault of a fellow learner.

The assault was captured in a viral video following the incident on Monday.

“The incident allegedly took place at Sibasa Block A and was reported to the police this morning,” Mojapelo added.

He said the victim reportedly went home that afternoon and locked herself in her room.

“She overdosed on tablets and was found unconscious, by her mother. She was taken to Siloam Hospital where she was certified dead on arrival,” he explained.

Mojapelo said an inquest docket has been opened and that police investigations continue.

“The child will be dealt with in accordance with the Child Justice Act,” he concluded.

The incident has been noted with concern by Education MEC, Polly Boshielo.

“Bullying is wrong and will never be tolerated in our schools. We send our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased learner and pledge our commitment towards ensuring that all those involved in bullying incidents are made to face the consequences of their actions. It is important that we also capacitate our schools to strengthen enforcement of their code of conduct, especially on such incidents. Education is a societal matter, therefore putting the responsibility on all of us to ensure a safe learning and teaching environment,” said Boshielo.
