Phalaborwa protests: Police vow to arrest those involved

Businesses and schools around Phalaborwa, Namakgale and Lulekani were disrupted by earlier protest action.

LIMPOPO – According to a statement by Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the violent protests started last week.

“A decision has been taken to deploy more police members to contain the situation and to hunt down the instigators and anyone involved,” he explained.

Mojapelo said protesters previously blocked the R71 and R40, by using barricades and burning tyres.

“The protests have disrupted services in the areas and, as a result, people failed to go to work and children were also unable to go to school,” he added.

The Transport Department’s Spokesperson, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala, said the R40/R530 and R71 is currently open.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba, has strongly condemned the protests.

“We will not hesitate to take strong action, including arresting anyone who instigates or participates in these violent acts. The police will maintain their strong presence in the affected areas to contain the situation and we therefore urge our communities to return back to normal,” concluded Ledwaba.

Mojapelo urged anyone with information about those inciting violence to contact the Mopani District Commissioner, Maj Gen Maggy Mathebula at 082 499 1969.

“Alternatively, the can contact the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or their nearest police station,” he concluded.
