Limpopo security guard shot: Suspect (39) remanded in custody

Two firearms, one of which was reportedly used to commit the murder, were recovered during the arrest, says the police.

LIMPOPO – The accused in the murder of 40-year-old Matshembe Maphambanyene appeared in the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 12 April and his case was postponed to 1 June.

Maphambanyene was shot while on night duty at a weighbridge near Groblersbrug border post. His body was found in the guardroom the following morning by fellow security guards who reported for duty.

Police were called, commenced with the necessary follow-ups and the suspect, a 39-year-old colleague of the deceased, was arrested on Tuesday morning, at Onverwacht outside Lephalale. “During the arrest the police recovered two firearms and 15 rounds of live ammunition. Preliminary police investigations revealed that the firearms belonged to the company where both the deceased and suspect were employed.”

The suspect faces charges of murder and robbery.

LIMPOPO – A 39-year-old man arrested for the fatal shooting of a security guard at the weighbridge near Groblersbrug border post, was remanded in custody for further police investigation.

Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe says the man was arrested last week Tuesday at Onverwacht outside Lephalale.  “During the arrest the police recovered two firearms and 15 rounds of live ammunition.”

40-year-old Matshembe Maphambanyene was reportedly shot while on night duty at the said weighbridge and his body was found in the guardroom the following morning by fellow security guards who reported for duty.

The suspect faces charges of murder and robbery and is expected back in court on until 1 April.3

LIMPOPO – A 39-year-old has been arrested in connection with the shooting of a security guard at the weighbridge near Groblersbrug border post, last week.

40-year-old Matshembe Maphambanyene was reportedly shot while on night duty at the said weighbridge on Thursday evening. His body was found in the guardroom on Friday morning by fellow security guards who reported for duty.

Police were called, commenced with the necessary follow-ups and the suspect was arrested on Tuesday morning, at Onverwacht outside Lephalale, says Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

 “During the arrest the police recovered two firearms and 15 rounds of live ammunition.”

Preliminary police investigations have since revealed that the firearms belonged to the company where both the deceased and suspect were employed. “It is believed that one of the recovered firearms was used to commit the murder,” he added.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Phalala Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of murder and robbery and in the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Investigations into the incident still continue and anyone with information can contact the station commander, Capt Mphoto Mphoto Malesela at 082 469 1079.

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Maj Genl Samuel Manala applauded the team for the swift arrest of the suspect.
