Two men linked to taxi violence incident pursued, arrested at Nyl Plaza

The duo were pursued by police after they shot a driver of a taxi and assaulted several passengers, says the police. 

LIMPOPO – The police have welcomed the arrest of two men involved in the shooting of a taxi driver in the Seshego policing area over the weekend. Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe said the driver was stopped next to a high school in the Moletjie area when he was accosted by the suspects.

“The driver was shot and assaulted and passengers in the taxi were seriously injured during the incident,” Ngoepe added.

The police were notified about the incident and reacted. “The suspects were spotted travelling along the N1 road in the direction of Gauteng and the police, together with the assistance of the Saps Limpopo Highway Patrol Team (LHP) and the Provincial Tracking Team, the culprits were cornered and stopped at the Nyl Plaza.”

Both suspects were arrested.

“During the arrest, it was discovered that the chassis number of the vehicle was tampered with and also established that the vehicle was utilised to commit a number of violent crimes in the Matlala, Seshego, Mankweng and Polokwane policing precincts, respectively.”

He added that the duo, aged 32 and 49, are expected to appear in the local magistrate’s court soon. Meanwhile, in a separate operation the police arrested two suspects, aged 26 and 46, for possession of explosives, possession of suspected stolen properties and the possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.

“The suspects were found in the possession of 11 rolls of V6 explosives, five blasting cartridges, R1 500 in cash, balaclavas and gloves.”

Ngoepe says the one suspect is currently out on bail for similar offences.

These suspects were among 1 203 suspects who were arrested during operation “Vhuthu hawe” which was conducted throughout the province until Sunday, 11 April.

The suspects were apprehended for offences such as murder, attempted murder, robberies, assault, common robbery, armed robbery, sexual offences such as rape, burglary businesses, burglary residential, stock theft, theft of a motor vehicle, drug-related crimes, driving under the influence of liquor, the possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, Immigration Act, public drinking, the contravention of the National Road Traffic Act and illegal dealing in liquor.

Over 27 000 sticks of counterfeit cigarettes, four motor vehicles, 12 firearms, 27 dangerous weapons of which 23 were knives, four plasma TV’s, 104 727g of dagga, 12 dagga plants, 10g of cocaine powder, 20g of cocaine, crystal meth, mandrax powder, 70g of nyaope, 955 060ml of liquor were confiscated and 1 514 fines were issued for the contravention of the National Road Traffic Act.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba applauded the work that was performed by the men and women in blue.
