LIMPOPO – Following a head-on collision on the R524 on Thursday, five more people have been killed on Limpopo roads.

According to a statement by the Transport Department’s Media Liaison Officer, Mike Maringa, four people died and one was seriously injured following a head-on collision on the D856 near Philadelphia in the Sekhukhune district last night.

Maringa said the incident involved a Volkswagen Polo and Mahindra bakkie.

“Drivers of both vehicles and two passengers were certified dead on the scene. One passenger sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital,” he explained.

Maringa said reckless driving has been cited as a possible cause of the incident.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a Hyundai and Toyota sedan collided on the R81 outside Giyani last night.

“It is believed that one of the drivers was overtaking on a barrier line and collided with the other oncoming sedan. The driver of the Hyundai was killed instantly and the passenger escaped with minor injuries,” Maringa said.

He added that the driver and passenger of the Toyota sedan sustained serious injuries and were taken to Khensani Hospital.
