State fuel scam: Eleventh suspect arrested

The man was arrested in connection with a fuel card scam in which the state has suffered a loss of over R100 000, says the Hawks.

LIMPOPO – An eleventh suspect in the state fuel scam was arrested in Groblersdal on Wednesday, 24 March. Spokesperson for the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit, Capt Matimba Maluleke says continuous probe into alleged fraud and theft involving South African Police Service (SAPS) fuel cards resulted in the arrest of the 27-year-old man.

This brings the total amount of people arrested to 11 in connection with a fuel card scam run at a petrol station in the area, in which the state has suffered a loss of over R100 000.

Maluleke explained the the latest suspect is a petrol attendant at the said garage and colluded with his colleagues and police officials attached to the Groblersdal Police Station to steal money from the state. 

In an earlier statement Maluleke explained that the suspects would wait for motorists to pay cash for their fuel then would swipe the fleet card in return for money and share it among themselves. The state a suffered a loss of over R100 000 thus far.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Groblersdal Magistrate Court soon on charges of theft and fraud. 

Ten accused persons, who include six police officials (two sergeants and  fourconstables ), two petrol attendants and two cashiers, were arrested in February during the Hawks initial takedown operation. They have since been released on bail.

More arrests are still expected, Maluleke concluded.
