Litigation attorney ranks among the best

With experience as a litigation attorney, Ivy Park resident, Lerato Letsoalo was recently named as one of the Courtroom Mail's 100 Women Lawyers 2021.

Lerato specialises in matrimonial, divorce and third party claims and describes litigation as an exciting journey as each matter brought before her, puts her in a position to better equip and improve herself through research.

The 28-year-old, mother of one, holds an LLB degree from the University of South Africa (Unisa) and is a litigation attorney at PMK Tladi and Associates in Polokwane.

During her career, Lerato has finalised countless matters, out of which, 11 were actual opposed trials before the regional and district courts in Polokwane, Seshego, Mahwelereng, Thohoyandou, Lebowakgomo, Mankweng, Nebo, Tzaneen, Mokopane and Pretoria.

“My understanding and fascination with law is that one always has an opportunity to serve ordinary members of the community and to further educate oneself about the constant evolution of the law. I aspire to make it past my position of professional assistant to that of one of the directors at PMK Tladi and Associates and maybe even make it to being appointed in the judiciary as a magistrate or judge in the province,” she said.

Lerato says she is motivated by her seniors at work, who, together, have a combined 44 years experience in litigation. Challenges she faces includes balancing home life with work and the professionalism that comes with delivering excellent service to her clients, but she says that she tackles it head on.

Lerato told the Polokwane Observer that her daily routine includes ensuring contacting and consulting with clients, as well as drafting notices.

“I get to serve the people in my community, which is fulfilling for me and having a judgement in your favour is the best feeling,” she added. One of her recent successes includes finalising a matter virtually, during lockdown, in a matter that was unopposed.

She says being listed among fellow colleagues from the rest of Africa is exciting as it gives women a platform to put themselves out there and be an inspiration to other girls and women.

Lerato placed 59th and Courtroom Mail described her work in matrimonial matters as “exceptional” with regards to her age in the profession.

Lerato says she is a proud member of the Black Lawyers Association and is the branch secretary of the South African Women Lawyers Association, whose main goal is the empowerment and upliftment of women in the profession.

“I am proud and honoured to be serving in such a considerable organisation, protecting and preserving the rights of women all over the country,” she concluded.
