Drive responsibly this long weekend, warns Limpopo Traffic Department

The Transport Department says they have increased traffic official visibility, with a focus on the N1 between Gauteng and Polokwane.

POLOKWANE – The Transport Department’s Media Liaison Officer, Mike Maringa, says they are prepared for an influx of motorists over the long weekend.

Maringa says more people are expected on the roads because they tend to travel home to visit their families.

“The tourism industry is also open and we receive more and more visitors to the province for leisure reasons,” he adds.

Maringa says they have increased traffic official visibility, with a focus on the N1 between Gauteng and Polokwane.

“Most motorists use this road to travel to areas such as Phalaborwa, Malamulele and Giyani. We are not only increasing visibility on the N1, but also on our other provincial, district and municipal roads. We expect those who make use of these roads, to comply and our municipal officials are expected to do their part,” Maringa explains.

He says weekends are usually marred by fatal road accidents, which is mostly caused by speed.

“We have seen a rise in the number of pedestrians being killed. We expect motorists to do their part and adhere to the road regulations” he adds.

Maringa says they have encountered a problem of motorists being intoxicated, since the move to alert level one restrictions.

“If you indulge, do not drive. Our officials will not have mercy and arrest those who are guilty of not adhering to regulations,” he concludes.
