Woman dies in collision on Oost Street

A section of Oost Street was closed for around an hour to allow forensic investigations to be carried out following a fatal collision on Tuesday morning.

POLOKWANE – A vehicle incident near the intersection of Oost and Grobler streets earlier this morning, resulted in the death of a woman.

The incident happened at around 10:20 and involved a bakkie and a sedan.

According to reports the elderly driver of the sedan died on the scene. Another woman, the driver of the bakkie, was slightly injured.

Pieter Kubannek, owner of PLK Ambulance Services confirmed to Review that the injured patient was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for further medical treatment.

According to Mike Maringa, Media Liaison Officer for the Department of Transport, confirmed the incident and added that a light delivery vehicle (LDV) sideswiped a sedan.

“The driver of the the sedan died on the scene while the driver of the LDV sustained minor injuries.” 

The exact cause of the incident will form part of a police investigation but the contravention of traffic signal (reckless driving) has not been ruled out.

Authorities were on the scene and a section of Oost Streets was closed for around and hour to allow forensic investigations to be carried out.

First on the scene of an accident – What can I do

• Firstly, and most importantly, phone for an ambulance. (It is important to save an emergency number on your phone.)

• When arriving at the scene stop in such a way preferably off the roadway to ensure your safety.

• Do not pull people from the wreckage of a vehicle, as they could have spinal injuries.

• Stop the bleeding with a compression bandage or direct pressure to the bleeding site.

• It is important to try and stay calm and to reassure the patient(s).
