Limpopo traffic officers find 20 learners crammed inside Hyundai H1

The vehicle was stopped by traffic officers between Pienaarsrivier and Hammanskraal, earlier today.

LIMPOPO – A Hyundai H1 minibus was impounded after the driver was found to be transporting 20 learners.

The vehicles was stopped earlier today on the R101 between Pienaarrivier and Hammanskraal during an undercover operation by the Department of Transport.

In a statement, Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matomi Moremi-Taueatsoala, explained that the said vehicle was missed during a previous blitz operation.

“The vehicle was monitored and then pulled over near a petrol station in the area. A total of 20 Learners were found in the minibus, a vehicle which is certified to carry only nine passengers.”

The vehicle was impounded and the driver fined. The department arranged for alternative transport for the learners.

This incident comes just over a year after a video showing 58 learners climbing out of a 14-seater Toyota Quantum, went viral.

The vehicle was stopped in the Bela-Bela area in January 2020 and at the time the department urged parents to ensure that the vehicles that transport their loved ones are fully compliant with the law.

Schools were also urged to be vigilant and assist the department in ensuring that this kind of overloading does not reoccur.
