Kgomo murder trial: Court hears accused stabbed deceased in self defense

The murder trial will continue on Friday, 12 March in the Limpopo High Court, Polokwane Division.

POLOKWANE – The murder trial of Thoriso Kgomo resumed in the Limpopo High Court Polokwane Division today (Wednesday, 10 March).

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Regional Spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhagi says the 19-year-old accused faces a charge of murder. He defended himself on Wednesday after his lawyer withdrew from the case.

“Today the court heard that the accused stabbed Kgomo four times in self defense. This is after the deceased took his cap worth R350.”

The accused also faces counts of rape and kidnapping. “On the count of rape he told the court that he was practicing what had seen in pornographic videos.”

The case was postponed until Friday, 12 March when the accused will call a witness on the count of kidnapping, she concluded.

POLOKWANE – The murder trial of Thoriso Kgomo started in the Limpopo High Court Polokwane Division on Monday, 8 March.

Kgomo was stabbed at a New Year’s party in January 2019, and succumbed to his injuries while in hospital a few days later.

His murder sparked outrage within the community and later on, a 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection with his murder. The boy has since turned 19 and will be tried as an adult.

On Monday, the trial was postponed to Tuesday, due to the withdrawal of the suspect’s lawyer.

The suspect defended himself on Tuesday as three state witnesses took to the stand.

Rhodes Kgomo, family spokesperson, says the events of that night were relayed in court by the three witnesses.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Regional Spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhagi, confirmed that the trial started on Monday, but was not able to confirm the proceedings.

The trial continues today.
