Two young male lions were put down after the attack, says the police.

LIMPOPO – An incident where a tracker was mauled to death by two lions at a reserve in Thabazimbi, was confirmed by the South African National Parks (SANParks).

In a statement on Monday, 8 March, Reynold “Rey” Thakhuli, SANParks Acting Head of Communications said the man was attacked by two young lions within the contractual land in the Marakele National Park on Saturday, 6 March.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said the deceased, 27-year-old Malibongwe Mfila, was performing his duties at the Marataba Safari Lodge when he was attacked by two lions. “It is alleged he had gone into the bush to track animals such as elephant and lions in order to advise the guides as and when they do game drives on their location. During his trip he exited his vehicle and was attacked by two lions.”

A passerby who noticed the lions eating human remains alerted the park manager who in turn informed the police. The lions were immediately tracked and shot.
