Blue light initiative bags Mooketsi traffic team top award

Their initiative helped their department save millions of Rand in fuel and vehicle maintenance, says the Department of Transport.

LIMPOPO – The traffic department in Mooketsi recently scooped the top award during the 18th Public Sector Innovation Awards which was hosted by the Department of Public Services and Administration in Gauteng.

The awards single out projects that have made significant progress in improving public sector service delivery through implementing ground-breaking interventions, and the Mooketsi team’s blue light initiative bagged them the Special Ministerial Award.

In a Facebook post, the provincial Transport Department said the traffic officers from Mooketsi Traffic Control Centre (Mopani District) went beyond the call of duty by constructing a stationary blue light at the traffic control centre. “The team constructed a stationary blue light out of recycled blue lights from written-off vehicles. The light is used instead of an officer’s motor vehicle and through their initiative, they did not only help the department save millions of Rand in fuel and vehicle maintenance, but improved visibility on the approach and exit of the Mooketsi Traffic Control Centre.”

“The team, led by the Mopani District Director, Joel Chauke, entered their project in the innovative solution category, but the judges thought their entry was way above the requirements for the category and the call of duty. They were thus awarded the Special Ministerial Award.”

The prize includes a cheque worth R30 000, a trophy and a certificate.
