Premier promises dignity for all through housing project

Premier Chupu Mathabatha has pledged to continue to honour the province's commitment to restore the dignity of people, by providing them with safer, well-located and decent housing.

This will go a long way in improving the quality of life through a R750 million provincial housing project.

During his State of the Province Address last week, he mentioned that in the coming financial year, government will deliver 5 000 houses across all the districts, supplemented by 148 rental units for those who qualify to participate in the housing rental market.

“Through the construction of houses and servicing of sites, we aim to create no fewer than 3 000 additional jobs in the sector. This will provide the much-needed shelter for over 20 000 residents of our province. As part of the programme to guarantee security of housing ownership in the coming financial year, we will present over 3 000 housing beneficiaries with title deeds.”

According to Mathabatha, government will through Risima Housing Finance, finalise the terms of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Polokwane Municipality for the development of gap market housing in the Polokwane Ext 72 and 79 project.

This project is expected to assist the municipality in reducing its housing backlog, whilst at the same time providing decent housing for middle income earners.

The project will see a combined 1 000 units constructed in the two areas.

Municipal Communications Manager, Matshidisho Mothapo says any first-time home owners earning an income of between R3 500 and R22 000 qualify for housing in this development.

Mothapo says the memorandum to be signed will detail the development phases and process to be followed, but the first phase of 200 units will resume as soon as sales are finalised as previously advertised by the municipality.

“Since the first phase has already being completed for sale and public has applied residents can apply for phase 2 as soon as it is published and advertised.”

Extension 79 shares borders with Legae La Batho and Polokwane Extension 78, previously referred to as Disteneng, which is on the left of the Nelson Mandela Drive on the way to Seshego. Polokwane Extension 72 shares borders with Madiba Park.
