POLOKWANE – Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) is advocating for the protection of its infrastructure following an incident of vandalism at reservoirs located on the outskirts of the city, over the weekend.
LNW’s spokesperson, Yolande Nel told Review that an incident of suspected vandalism and theft at Polokwane Municipality’s Krugersberg Reservoirs was reported on Monday, February 22. She said that municipal infrastructure which houses a telemetry system operated by LNW was targeted during the incident. “On site it was found that the hut where the telemetry system is stored was apparently vandalised. The corrugated iron roof and the windows to the infrastructure were also damaged and cables, wire as well as three 102Ah batteries were stolen in the process.”

LNW said the continuous acts of vandalism and water theft have led to ‘great losses across its area of operation’. “During the current financial year incidents that have thus far been reported included illegal water connections from main pipelines, theft of electrical cables, screening equipment, empty chemical containers as well as batteries and padlocks tampered with,” reads a statement on their Facebook page.
The state-owned enterprise called on the community to assist them by reporting any acts of vandalism or illegal activity to the relevant authorities.
