2021 Marula Festival put on hold until ‘global health situation normalises’

The decision to postpone the festival was taken by the Limpopo's Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism on Thursday, 18 February.

LIMPOPO – The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism on Thursday took the decision to reschedule the prestigious annual Limpopo Marula festivities for 2021. The festival is hosted annually in February and marks the a month-long celebration of the Marula tree and its fruit.

The Marula tree, together with its fruit, has been celebrated for its importance to the communities of Limpopo as well as the opportunities provided to emerging businesses that harvest the fruit. It is during this season that the people of the province continue to enjoy the Marula Fruit and its byproducts consisting of Marula juice, jam, peanut butter, Marula beauty products, Marula skin oil, soap, and the much-loved Morula traditional beverage commonly known as Mukumbi/Morula/Vukanyi.

The annual Marula Festival aims to promote preservation of the Marula tree as well as encourage entrepreneurs to responsibly harvest the natural wealth provided by their environment.

Zaid Kalla, Departmental Spokesperson says that due to the current global health crisis, together with measures put in place under the National Lockdown, the department will not be able to proceed with any of the activities celebrated under the annual Limpopo Marula Festival.

He added that the department, however, looks forward to reviving the festival when the global health situation normalizes.
