[LIVE] Local parents stage sit-in outside Department of Education

Frustrated parents want their children to be placed in local schools and want answers from the department.

POLOKWANE – On Monday morning, a group of parents gathered outside the Provincial Department of Education in Biccard Street for a planned picket.

The parents told the Review journalist on the scene that they are frustrated about the placement of their children in schools, adding that they had applied on time but to date, have received no feedback from the schools to which they applied. The parents are demanding answers from the department and say they will not leave the premises until officials can confirm the children’s placement at local schools.

In an address on Sunday afternoon, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said the demand for space in schools, especially for Grades 1 and 8, remains a challenge.

She added that all provinces are experiencing a high demand and more than 16 000 learners still need to be placed
