Deacon murder case to resume in March

Sophie Mmako (51), Lazarus Mahlo (41), Advance Amid (30) and Casper Mudau (35) appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court today.

POLOKWANE – The four accused in the Deacon murders; Sophie Mmako (51), Lazarus Mahlo (41), Advance Amid (30) and Casper Mudau (35) appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court today and the case was postponed to 3 March for further investigation.

In the previous appearances the court heard the bail application of Sophie Mmako and Lazarus Mahlo who both based their applications on residing in Polokwane and having families to take care of.

After Judge Janine Ungerer refused the bail application for the two suspects, Mmako made a plea to the judge who offered her another bail application which was also denied. The judge cited the nature of the case and the public outcry as the main reasons why bail was denied, this after Mmako emphasised that she was the only breadwinner and had to take care of her family.

Amid and Mahlo earlier abandoned their bail application.

Each accused faces two counts of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping.

The four were arrested following a 72-hour activation plan after Lizette and Hettie’s bodies were found on the R37 on the evening of 10 September.

The deceased were attacked in their townhouse earlier the day and their bodies were found in the back of Lizette’s vehicle after police gave chase and the driver of the vehicle abandoned it next to the R37 road. The bodies also had several stab wounds. The latest investigations show that both women died of strangulation.
