Taxi ranks completed by March

The municipality allocated a budget of R30 million for the facelifts of two taxi ranks in the city.

The revamp of the taxi ranks at the city centre and Limpopo Mall will be completed in March, the Spokesperson of the Polokwane Municipality, Thipa Selala, confirmed.

The revamp for the two facilities, which started in August last year, formed part of the municipality’s efforts to create a safe environment for public transport community operators and users, and also the broader CBD Movement Plan which seeks to address the current transport challenges experienced in the CBD.

The municipality allocated a budget of R30 million for the facelifts of which R14 million is allocated to revamp the rank at Spar City Centre and R16 million for the taxi rank next to Pick n Pay.

“The initial completion date was 15 December 2020 and the revised completion date for the two taxi ranks is 31 March 2021.”

He also added that the contractors experienced challenges in the procurement of specialised materials due to the lockdown and builders being away for the festive season.

“Most companies have reduced their workforce and production is very slow. Manufacturing and delivery are taking longer than anticipated. We want to improve accessibility and mobility by transport users within the CBD.

“We want to create a safe environment for public transport community operators and users by restructuring and re-organising the sociology-economic ecosystem of the CBD.”
