Businessman busted for selling alcohol under adjusted level 3 lockdown

The liquor store owner from Botlokwa was among 1274 people who were arrested for contravening the Disaster Management Act during the latest joint police operations which were conducted in the province.

LIMPOPO – A 39-year-old man faces charges related to the Contravention of the Disaster Management Act, that includes the sale and transportation of liquor, said the police in a statement earlier today (Monday, 18 January).

Members of the Limpopo Highway Patrol Unit arrested the liqour store owner this past week in Botlokwa after he was found to be selling liqour from his premises. “He also faces a charge of bribery after he reportedly offered the officers R5 000 to drop the charges,” said Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

The man’s arrest coincides with the recent arrest of 2 511 suspects, aged between 19 and 59, for various offences such as murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession and dealing in drugs and illicit cigarettes, burglaries, robberies, arson, malicious damage to property (MITP), assault, theft of motor vehicle, Contravention of the National Road Traffic Act, sexual offences, stock theft, possession of suspected stolen properties, Illegal Immigration Act, drunken driving, assault on police, reckless and negligent handling of a firearm, resisting arrest etc.

These suspects were arrested during an ongoing joint police operations which was conducted across the province from 9 January until the early hours of this morning and according to Ngoepe 1 274 of the people arrested, face charges related to contravening the Disaster Management Act, which includes the sale and transportation of liquor and breaking the curfew. Other operational successes included the recovery of five firearms, 10 stolen vehicles, 55 dangerous weapons, counterfeit cigarettes, various drugs and other various items.

All the suspects are expected to appear before their local magistrate courts.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba applauded the operational members for their endless commitment in the fight against crime and thanked the communities for supplying reliable information. Criminal activities and failure to adhere to Lockdown regulations can be reported to the nearest police station or via the MySAPSApp. Alternatively they can also contact the 10111 number or the 24-hour Crime Stop number at 08600 10111.
