Lehlogonolo’s business is a chirping success

The 25-year-old Lehlogonolo Tlolane, from Mankweng is a backyard poultry farmer who started breeding chickens when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country last year.

POLOKWANE – “When President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that we would be under lockdown, I thought most people, myself included, were most likely to be jobless. I sat down and thought of ideas on how to generate income for myself and my family, and that is when I stumbled across the idea of chicken breeding.

“Even though I was clueless about agriculture and how to run a poultry farm, I jumped right in and sailed through my new venture with ease, love and passion.”

Tlolane told BONUS that he had no other place to start his business than at home and has since upgraded from an old shack in his backyard to owning a decent chicken coop.

Tlolane says he decided on agriculture as he believes healthy food is a necessity and he wants to help provide the nation with organic and healthy chickens.

He enhanced his knowledge and skills about poultry farming by using the internet as a learning medium to obtain the needed comprehension about the breeding and life cycle of chickens.

He also spoke to BONUS about some of the challenges he has faced since starting his business, which include mortality rates in the winter as well as the plucking of the chickens.

“I plan to buy a chicken plucking machine to make my job easier,” he added.

He has also extended his business enterprise by opening a Shisanyama, using the chickens as his main product.
