Duza Medusa is determined to be a cut above the rest
Female barber, Duza Medusa is proving to be a force within the hair industry and says she loves proving people wrong.
POLOKWANE – “I don’t make mistakes when I cut hair.”
This is 25-year-old, Mduduzi Makwela’s message to anybody who doubts her skills as a barber. Affectionately known as Duza Medusa, she is proving to be a force within the hair industry.
She started cutting her father’s hair at a young age.
“He cuts chiskop almost every weekend, and I would trim his hair before shaving it all off and that was how I used to practice.
“When I got better, I started cutting my cousins’ hair and the skill just kept improving from there,” she explained.
It was a bad experience with a barber that led Duza to venture on her own as she decided she would stop trusting other people with her hair and learnt to do it on her own.
In December 2019, she decided to officially establish her mobile barbershop business and she has had her fair share of doubt from male clients.
“You know how it is, some people won’t trust you simply because you are a woman.
“Some men don’t think I could be as good as other barbers but trust me, I am better than most barbers working in big barber shops. I don’t use any enhancement so you can just imagine what I could do if I had enhancements,” she added.
She has had bad experiences with people who refuse to take advice, despite approaching her for her expertise.
What makes what she does worthwhile is the smile on her clients’ faces when she is done with their hair.
“I love the reactions of people who initially doubt what I am able to do. I like proving people wrong,” she said.
Besides hair, she loves music.
Still busy with research, Duza is trying to source funding as her plan in the next five years is to establish a project to assist men with hair problems such as alopecia (hair loss).
She cuts both male and female hair and she does house calls.
