Second wave caught us off-guard, residents say

Many residents argue that the second wave of the Coronavirus was a result of the public’s inability of not adhering to the rules and regulations of the lockdown. The province has recorded over 1 700 deaths of Coronavirus since 3 December.

Meanwhile, 35 723 Coronavirus cases have been reported in the province with the Capricorn District leading the fray with 12 731 cases, Waterberg 7 146, Mopani 5 612 and Sekhukhune 4 018.

Polokwane Observer asked residents if the resurgence could have been caused by the behaviour of people who were engaged in various festivities during the festive season.

George Seakamela: “The festive season is a different season. Normally, people are in a jolly mood and turn to forget other aspects of life. We should not spare a rod for those that did not adhere to the regulations but create awareness about this virus because it is dangerous. Some were complying but for others the task seemed too heavy for them.”
Mahlatse Mabeba: We must go back to level 5. Most people were not at their best behaviour, but I think with all the regulations and enforcement we will beat this Coronavirus battle.
Tshepho Makola: “Most people behaved well over the festive season. Unfortunately there will always be those bad apples. This fight against coronavirus should be a collective effort and I think we are on the right track. We just need to adhere to all the regulations of the lockdown.”
Krynauw Otto: Everywhere we went during the holiday, people obeyed the rules, wearing their masks. If we did go somewhere and the people did not wear their masks, we simply went somewhere else. The reason for the second wave is most probably the fact that people gathered together in big groups.
Angline Bobape: People were on their best behaviour it is just that the second wave caught everyone off-guard. We need to be more careful. This virus is here to stay and we are already feeling the effects of it.
