Limpopo premier tells citizens to ‘not fear’ Covid-19 vaccine

The PCC also remains concerned about the behaviour of those who attend funerals, he said.

POLOKWANE – Don’t allow yourself to be intimated into opposing the upcoming Covid-19 vaccine programme. This is the message from Limpopo Premier, Stanley Chupu Mathabatha, in a statement following the Covid-19 Provincial Command Council virtual meeting that was held yesterday.

Part of the agenda included the engagement on the current environmental situation the province finds itself in and the state of readiness regarding the rollout of the Corona virus vaccine.

“The council was informed about the ongoing discontent among the people of Limpopo regarding the effects of the coming vaccine.  We therefore decided to inform our people not to be intimidated into opposing the upcoming vaccination programme,” he stated.

Government will not surrender its mandate of caring for its people to the best of its ability, “by allowing toxic elements into society”, the statement reads.

“Our scientists told us that this vaccine is safe for human use and there is no need to be sceptical. Hence the vaccine remains a critical component in our global fight against Covid-19 pandemic.  As the leadership collective, we will ensure that we participate equally with you during vaccination process so that we lead by example. Once again, there’s no need to fear.”

According to the premier, the PCC remains concerned about the scores of people who attend funerals. “We regard the attendance and behaviour of people while at the funeral, as a major super spreader event.”

He reiterated that current regulations allow for 50 people to attend a funeral, while all safety regulations are adhered to including sanitising and social distancing. “The majority of our people continue to ignore these important guidelines, causing deadly harm to themselves and others.  We call on the people of Limpopo, to not attend a funeral if you are not a member of the family or a close relative.”

He further said that municipalities and law enforcement agencies should monitor and enforce compliance at funerals, to support government’s mission of saving lives at all costs.
