2-vehicle crash in Giyani claims the lives of four people including pregnant woman

The woman was in a ambulance on her way to a nearby hospital for delivery when the incident occurred

LIMPOPO –  A 2-vehicle collision on the R81 in Giyani resulted in the deaths of four people including a pregnant woman. Four others, among them two emergency medical workers, were critically injured after a minibus taxi and a ambulance collided at the Siyandhani Cross road on Wednesday morning.

Mike Maringa, Media Liaison Officer for the Department of Transport said the driver of the taxi reportedly failed to stop at the traffic light and then collided with the ambulance. “The driver of the taxi and two passengers died on the scene and three occupants from the ambulance and another passenger from the taxi were critically injured during the incident.”

In a statement, Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba confirmed that a 19-year-old pregnant woman was critically injured and died as a result thereof. “The woman was being transported to a hospital to deliver when the incident occurred.”

She added that two EMS members were also injured and were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

MEC Ramathuba sent her condolences to the families of the deceased. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families who have lost their loved ones. We can’t even begin to contemplate the pain they might be going through.”

The status of the unborn child is unknown. Reckless and negligent driving has been cited as the possible cause of this collision, Maringa concluded.
