Cunget is making waves in the street wear industry

Cunget is an exciting up-and-coming fashion label launched by 24-year-old, Kalkspruit resident, David Kwena Matsi.

POLOKWANE – Cunget is an elegant street-wear clothing brand founded in February 2017 whose aim was to close the untapped gap of the fashion industry in village economies.

Matsi, a final year Multimedia student at the Tshwane University of Technology, says he wants to inspire young people in rural areas that it is possible to achieve your dreams, even if you are a villager. “To achieve the above goals, I create unique, contemporary garments which complement a variety of style favourites. I wanted to drive economic and social change in the community,” he said.

Matsi added that the day to day running of the brand is guided by its four founding pillars: entrepreneurial acumen, creative marketing, innovative design and community activism.

Cunget brand ambassador, The Most Trusted DJ, Q Scotch, wear the Cunget Sweater.

“In order to maintain consistency and relevance, Cunget host events throughout the year to attract customers and promote the broader identity of the brand. Moreover, we have partnered with community based institutions to conduct back-to-school campaigns and sanitary drives in schools around our community. Our long term goal is to grow Cunget to be a valuable and sought after brand in the hood.”

Matsi says he met a man in Gauteng named Kabelo who taught him the ins and outs of the industry, which sparked his passion further. “I didn’t know that Cunget would turn into a big clothing brand. I started off with 10 caps only and they sold out in two days. The community loves the merchandise and my goal is to have a store of my own which will allow me to employ other people.”

Matsi concluded by saying his brand ambassadors include DJ Q Scotch and Gaddaffi the Poet.
