Hitmen and wife who orchestrated murder of Thohoyandou businessman, arrested

The wife of a murdered businessman from Thohyandou and the two hitmen she hired to complete the job, were arrested during a recent festive season operation in Limpopo

POLOKWANE – A 34-year-old woman and her two accomplices are among 2 950 suspects who were arrested for various crimes during the festive season operations which were conducted throughout the province between 17-20 December.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo says the woman was arrested for allegedly masterminding the murder of her 37-year-old husband, a well-known businessman of an engineering company in Thohyandou. The deceased was shot dead in front of his home in Thohyandou on 14 February and the woman was positively linked to the murder after her accomplices were nabbed for a separate crime.

“Two of the suspects were arrested after they allegedly robbed a post office at Masia and were later linked to the murder of the said businessman. Further police investigations revealed that the woman allegedly hired the suspects to kill her husband and she was arrested on Friday, 18 December 2020 at Mpheni village,” Mojapleo explained.

The trio faces charges related to murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Ongoing festive season joint operations in Limpopo

Other successes of the ongoing operations include the arrest of six suspects on charges of arrested for conspiracy to commit poaching.

“Three of the men were nabbed at The Oaks outside Hoedspruit on Sunday morning after they were found in the possession hunting rifle, eight rounds of live ammunition and two knives. The remaining three men were arrested at a local game reserve in the early hours of Saturday after they were found in possession of a hunting rifle, 9mm pistol, 17 rounds of live ammunition, a silencer, binoculars and four knives.”

Meanwhile in Musina, three foreign nationals were arrested at the Beitbridge Border Post on Thursday, for unlawful possession commercial explosives, blasting cartridges and capped fuses.

In Bela-Bela, four men between the ages of 18 and 22 were arrested in connection with the gang rape of two teenage girls.

The ongoing operations are being conducted by various police operational units together with other law enforcement agencies across the province.

All the suspects who were arrested will appear before the relevant magistrate’s court soon on charges related to murder, attempted murder, robberies, conspiracy to commit poaching, rape, possession of explosives, conspiracy to commit murder, obstructing the ends of justice, crimen injuria, resisting arrest, sexual assault, possession of unlicensed firearm, possession of illicit cigarettes, assault GBH, assault common, common robbery, robbery with weapon other than firearm, sexual offences, burglary residential and business. 

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers commended the operational teams for their continuous hard work, dedication and commitment in the fight against crime. “The police will intensify these operations to ensure that all communities in the province are and feel safe.”
