7 arrested for temporary housing project fraud

The arrests were made in Polokwane and Johannesburg for alleged fraud of over R2,4 million relating to the Talana Temporary Housing Project.

LIMPOPO – Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke says four of the accused were remanded in custody. They will join the first three accused, who were arrested in Polokwane, for formal bail application on Tuesday.

LIMPOPO – Seven people will appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court next week, following their arrests this week in Polokwane and Johannesburg respectively.

The seven were arrested for alleged fraud of over R2,4 million relating to the Talana Temporary Housing project.

The initial arrests were made in Polokwane, where a 44-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man were arrested on Thursday. The woman is the director of the company who was awarded the tender for the project and the man, a project manager. A juristic person (the company) was also arrested.

According to a statement by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Limpopo Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke, the duo appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

“They have been remanded in custody until Tuesday, 22 December for a formal bail application,” he added.

Meanwhile, four more people, believed to be members of the bid evaluation committee, were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation in various parts of Johannesburg on Friday.

“The suspects allegedly vouched for the company to construct the housing units without thoroughly checking the validity of the documents that were submitted. It is further alleged that the temporary housing units do not adhere to the design and specifications,” Maluleke explained.

The four, aged between 35 and 43, are expected to appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 21 December to face multiple charges of fraud.
