The Premier, Chupu Mathabatha, launched the provincial Arrive Alive 24/7 365 Days Waya Waya Operation at a roadblock that was conducted on the N1 just outside the city on Friday.
The launch was celebrated with a parade from SABC Park prior to law enforcement agencies moving towards the N1 for the actual roadblock.
Mathabatha says the operation for this festive season is to ensure that all road users adhere to rules of the roads.
He was accompanied by Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya and Provincial Police Commissioner, Nneke Ledwaba.
During the roadblock Mathabatha and Lerule-Ramakhanya commended the good work done by law enforcement agencies on their relentless efforts to reduce fatalities and urged road users to comply and adhere to traffic rules during the festive season and beyond.
Mathabatha told motorists to ensure that they adhere to all the K53 rules as law enforcement agencies will not be lenient.
“Every little thing that you have learnt while driving will be taken into consideration. Ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy and that you are not driving under the influence of any substance.”
He says he is disappointed with the number of deaths on the provincial roads since the launch of the national operations by Minister Fikile Mbalula. “As much as the number has decreased from 48 to 30 deaths this time compared to last year over the same period, I am still disappointed because every life matters.”
Eighteen people lost their lives on Limpopo roads this weekend.
Immigration officials from Home Affairs were also present to assist in tracking illegal immigrants.
Mathabatha emphasised that anyone on the road should adhere to Covid-19 protocols.
