Safer festive season operations lead to over 2 000 arrests

A total of 2 187 people were arrested during the Safer Festive Season joint operations which were conducted throughout the province from 7 - 14 December.

LIMPOPO -The police in the province hit the ground running this past week with the arrest of 2 1 87 people for various offences that include possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession and dealing in drugs and illicit cigarettes, murder, attempted murder, robberies, burglaries, assault, theft of motor vehicle, Contravention of the National Road Traffic Act, various sexual offences, stock theft, possession of suspected stolen properties, Illegal Immigration Act, arson, drunk driving etc.

These arrests form part of the Safer Festive Season joint operations which were conducted throughout the province from 7 – 14 December.

Other success during the operation includes the confiscation of six firearms, 20 suspected stolen vehicles, 53 dangerous weapons and various drugs and other suspected stolen goods.

“As part of enforcing compliance with the Liquor Act, 445 fines were issued for liquor related offences that included drinking and drunk in public places. In addition, 758 Second-Hand Goods Act compliance inspections were conducted and 50 shebeens were also shut down. A total of 2 589 fines and compliance notices relating to the National Road Traffic Act were also issued.”

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwab commended the teams involved in these various operations and stressed that there will be no space for criminals to operate in the province throughout this festive period and beyond.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear before the various magistrate courts throughout the province, soon.

The police further urges anyone who witnesses a criminal acts or who has information about a wanted suspect or the existence of illegal firearms or stolen items including cars, to urgently call the nearest police station. Alternatively they can also contact the SAPS 10111 number, the 24-hour Crime Stop number at 0860010111 or file a complaint on the MySAPSApp.
