Duo arrested for murder of Mankweng woman (90), abandon bail application

The blind son of the deceased was seriously injured in the attack.

LIMPOPO – Two men accused of murdering 90-year-old, Ledile Sarah Dikgale have abandoned their bail applications. 

The deceased was killed during a house robbery at Marobala village in the Sebayeng policing area, outside Mankweng, on 14 November. The two accused, aged 32 and 33, were arrested 19 November during an intelligence-driven joint operation, Tshwara Tsotsi. The men are expected to re-appear on Monday, 6 January 2021.

LIMPOPO – The Mankweng Rional Court today denied bail to two men who stand accused of the murder of a 90-year-old woman and the attempted murder of her blind son, aged 71.

The deceased was killed during a house robbery at Marobala village in the Sebayeng policing area, outside Mankweng, on 14 November. The two accused, aged 32 and 33, were arrested 19 November during an intelligence-driven joint operation, Tshwara Tsotsi.

The accused will re-appear on Monday, 7 December for bail application, says Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

LIMPOPO – An intelligence-driven joint operation, Tshwara Tsotsi, led to the arrest of two men for the murder of a 90-year-old woman and her 71-year-old, blind son.

The two men, aged 33 and 37, were arrested on Thursday for the house robbery which took place on Saturday, 14 November at Marobala village in the Sebayeng policing area, outside Mankweng.

A statement issued by Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said the men were arrested at a local tavern following a tip-off from the community.

“The men were positively linked to the incident, in which they forcefully entered the victim’s house while they were sleeping. They demanded money from the elderly woman and assaulted both victims. They were stabbed several times with a sharp instrument before they fled the scene,” he explained.

Police and the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were called to the scene. The woman was declared dead on scene and her son was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“Police opened cases of house robbery, murder and attempted murder. Tshwara tsotsi, which comprised of members of the Capricorn Tracing Team and Crime Intelligence Unit, were joined by Sebayeng detectives and was activated to track down the suspects,” Ngoepe added.

The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Maj Gen Christine Moralakadi applauded the team for the swift arrest. Moralakadi also acknowledged the valuable information which was provided by the community.

The men appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court today, 20 November and their cases were postponed to 1 December for bail application and further police investigations, Ngoepe concluded.
