Taxi driver shot and killed, female passenger wounded in shooting at garage along N1

The police have launched a manhunt for two suspects who opened fire on a taxi driver and his passengers at a garage along the N1 south near a toll plaza earlier today.

LIMPOPO – A taxi driver was shot and killed and a woman injured during a shooting incident at a petrol station near the Kranskop Toll Plaza earlier today (Wednesday, 2 December).

According to police reports the deceased, who was driving mini bus taxi, was shot at around 10:30 by two unknown suspects. “It is reported that the taxi operator was traveling from Polokwane to Gauteng when he stopped at the garage. He together with passengers had left the taxi and walked into the kiosk shop and when they returned to the vehicle, two unknown suspects, armed with a pistol and a rifle, shot in their direction, fatally wounding the driver. A female passenger also sustained gunshot wounds during the attack,” said Police Spokesperson, Col  Moatshe Ngoepe.

The suspects thereafter fled in a red Volkswagen Polo sedan with unknown registration numbers.

Ngoepe said emergency medical services were called and the driver was declared dead at the scene by the paramedics. The injured passenger was treated at the scene and transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

The police have launched a manhunt for the culprits and appeal to anyone with information that can lead to their apprehension, to contact Lt Col Richard Boshomane at 079 894 5501.

“The motive behind the attack is not clear at this stage but the police have not ruled out taxi-related conflict.”

The identity of the deceased will be revealed once his family have been notified, Ngoepe concluded. The Police investigations are still continuing.
