Two people killed in Polokwane after bakkie rolls

Two men were flung out of the vehicle and another was partially trapped under the wreckage.

POLOKWANE -Two people are dead and a third injured after a bakkie rolled the R71 just outside the city in the early hours on Monday morning.

According to a statement issued by Russel Meiring, Communications Officer at ER24, paramedics arrived on the scene at around 03:00 to find the bakkie on its roof alongside the road.

“Two men were found lying some distance away from the vehicle while a third was found lying partially trapped beneath the vehicle. Medics assessed the men and found that the two men outside the vehicle had succumbed to their numerous injuries and they were declared dead by another service.”

Meiring added that the man which was found trapped beneath the bakkie was assessed and found with moderate injuries. “The man was carefully extricated and treated before he was transported to a nearby hospital for further care.”

The exact cause of the collision will be determined through police investigations.

Meanwhile, three people died, two sustained critical injuries and a third moderate injuries after a collision between a bakkie and taxi on the N1 north bypass at around 05:00 on Monday, 30 November.

Both vehicles caught on fire and three people, two from the taxi and the third from the bakkie were declared dead on the scene.

Meiring added that three other people sustained injuries and were tended to on the scene. “Assessments showed that two patients were in a critical condition, while the third was in a serious condition. Medics treated the patients and provided the critically injured with advanced life support interventions before they were transported to nearby hospitals for further care.”

The road between R81 and the Landdors Maré offramp was closed for 2 hours to allow emergency medical services attend to the injured and to clear the accident scene.
