Limpopo festive season operations lead to more than 1 600 arrests in one week

147 road blocks and 5 193 stop-and-searches were conducted as part of the operations.

LIMPOPO – The festive season operations conducted across the province has bore fruit with the arrest of 1 626 people in the past week.

The suspects, between the ages of 22 and 50 were arrested for various crimes such as the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, contravention of the Road Traffic Act, robberies, rape, murder, assault, burglaries and stock theft.

According to a statement by Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, 22 firearms, five suspected stolen motor vehicles, seven cell phones, 85 954 cartons of illicit cigarettes, 38 dangerous weapons, explosives, dagga, nyaope, 49 knives and 926 938 ml of liquor, were confiscated.

Highlights:

A 37-year-old man was arrested by the Provincial Crime Intelligence and Organised Crime units on Saturday, 28 November. The man was arrested for dealing in drugs and police recovered drugs as well as R7 810 in cash, which was concealed inside a car, which was also seized.

Meanwhile, a 29-year-old man was arrested by the Limpopo Highway Patrol team along the N1 following a stop-and-search. Self-made spikes, which are believed to be used along the roads to rob motorists, were found inside the car. The motor vehicle was reported stolen in November in the Brooklyn policing area in Gauteng,” Ngoepe explained.

He added that 147 road blocks and 5 193 stop-and-searches were conducted as part of the operations. A total of 1 765 road traffic summons were issued and 41 766 people and 16 227 motor vehicles were searched, while 34 shebeens were closed.

“The suspects are expected to appear before various magistrate’s courts throughout the province. The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba has urged members of the community in Limpopo to continue working closely with the police at all levels in the fight against crime to ensure a peaceful festive season period,” he added.

Ngoepe said that anyone who might witness a criminal act or who has information about a wanted suspect or the existence of illegal or stolen items, should urgently call their nearest police Station, the Crime Stop Number at 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app.
